This volume includes "Cantatas from the Leipzig period, 1730s and 1740s": No. 100 "God's works are most good" BWV 100, No. 14 "If God is not with us at this time" BWV 14, No. 197 "God is our sure hope" BWV 197, and "Glory to the Most High" BWV 197a [fragment]. "God's works are most good," BWV 100, composed for the 15th or 21st Sunday after Trinity, premiered around 1734 and revived around 1742. It is the last of three cantatas (the others being BWV 98 and BWV 99) based on chorales by S. Lodi. This six-movement work features a very brilliant opening and closing with prominent timpani and trumpet, followed by beautiful arias or duets in the middle.
Cantata No. 14, "If God were not with us at this time," BWV 14, is a five-movement work for the 4th Sunday after Epiphany, premiered in 1735. This chorale cantata, based on Luther's chorale of the same name, is believed to be the last of Bach's surviving works for which he composed all movements anew. It is arguably the most mature and dense of Bach's cantatas, showcasing astonishing technical mastery, particularly in the opening movement.
Cantata No. 197, "God is our sure desire," BWV 197, was composed around 1736/37. It is a large-scale wedding cantata consisting of two parts and ten movements. Movements 6 and 8 show adaptations from the Christmas cantata "Glory to the Most High," BWV 197a, based on a libretto by Picander.
