Potassiumis a mineral component, the right amount of which is necessary for the proper functioning of the body. It occurs in all its tissues[1]and is responsible for a number of processes taking place in the organs. It affects, among others, propermuscle function, supportsmaintenance of normalblood pressure andalso supports thefunctioning of the nervous systemcontributing to the improvement of memory and concentration. Consuming more potassium has been shown to reduce muscle mass loss in men[2]. It has also been shown that supplementation of this mineral in people with hypertension contributes to loweringblood pressure[3]and is associatedwith a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke[1].It is also assumed that the appropriate level of potassium can positively affect bonecondition, increasingtheir mineral density and reducing urinary calcium excretion[1].
Potassiumshould be supplied with the diet. It can be found in many foods, both plant and meat. The main sources of this mineral are fruits and vegetables - e.g. potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, bananas, apples and dried apricots and plums. It can also be easily supplemented by eating beans or legumes (e.g. beans and lentils), dairy products (e.g. yoghurt), fish, meat and nuts. Consumed potassium is absorbed mainly in the small intestine in about 90%, which makes it relatively easy to maintain its proper concentration in cells[1].
Hypokalaemia, or potassium deficiency, can cause a number of distressing symptoms e.g.: constipation, fatigue, muscle weakness and general malaise. In a more advanced stage, breathing difficulties, polyuria and cardiac arrhythmias may occur[1, 4].
In maintaining the unwavering balance of the body, supplements (which are valuable support, e.g. when using an elimination diet) often prove to be helpful, thanks to which you can avoid the undesirable symptoms associated with a deficiency of potassium.
